Stanserhorn – Ächerlipass - Arvigrad - Gräfimattnollen - Schluchberg - Storeggpass
To get to the start of the tour, we take the vintage funicular train and CabriO aerial cableway from Stans up the Stanserhorn. High up at around alt. 1900 m we can see almost the whole of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding mountains.

We go left on the summit circular path. The well-secured descent via Chrinnen to the Ächerlipass follows. This can be reached in around an hour. At Holzwang it's worth making a detour to the eponymous chapel. Then we tackle the ascent heading towards the Arvigrat. The view into the Engelberg and Sarneraa valleys is impressive. After a short descent, we continue on the Gräfimattgrat towards Laucheren. From here the view opens up into the Melch valley. A steep zigzag path leads up to the Schluchberg. The upper section is somewhat exposed. Part of it is secured with a rope as a handrail. This is followed by the key section of this leg, the Wagenleis (Charren) rocky outcrop. The small climbing section is also secured with a rope. We follow the ridge across alp pastures. With a bit of luck we might see alpacas here, which protect the flocks of sheep. After an easy descent we reach the Storeggpass.

Author’s advice
The quickest way back to Stans is by taking the Rugisbalm and Mettlen aerial cableways with their little cabins down to the valley floor. From there it's a 20 minute or so walk to Grafenort railway station. Alternatively, you can rent Nextbikes at the cableway terminus, if available. The tour is also possible in the opposite direction.
