Historic "Hechhuis" in Wolfenschiessen

×

Enjoying a quiet location in the lovely Engelberg valley between Stans and Engelberg is Nidwalden's largest municipality in terms of surface area, Wolfenschiessen, and its associated municipalities of Altzellen and Oberrickenbach. Numerous cableways and chairlifts allow access to relaxing destinations in the surrounding mountains.

Historical buildings and chapels

The Hechhuis manor house in Wolfenschiessen is probably the oldest edifice in Nidwalden. Its many windows and unusual ridge turrets are particularly eye-catching. Further on is Altzellen, where the chapel of St. Joder (patron saint of farmers) offers particularly fine views. Further place of worship, such as Bettelrüti chapel, the church of Maria Geburt and many others may be encountered on the Engelberg valley chapel trail.

Flying

The Wolfenschiessen region is dotted with paragliding and hang gliding launch sites. The Engelberg valley also looks lovely from the air.

Bannalp, an insider tip

Access to Bannalp, a gem of a destination, is provided by two aerial cableways. Visitors can expect to find a family-friendly walking and skiing area, as well as hospitable little places to eat. Footpaths lead past babbling streams, turquoise-blue Lake Bannalp and imposing mountains. Families can try solving the "mystery of the sparkling stone" on the Zwärgliweg (gnome trail), then enjoy themselves in the large playground. When it's time for a break, there are inviting barbecue spots (firewood provided) by Lake Bannalp.

Trübsee und Jochpass, Engelberg-Titlis

Did you know that the Trübsee and Jochpass area is located in the summer and winter holiday paradise of Engelberg-Titlis, on Nidwalden soil? The Trübsee lies at 1,800 m above sea level and can be reached by cable car from Engelberg. In summer, rowing boats invite you to discover the Trübsee. There are also barbecue areas with firewood and a children's playground at Trübsee. After a short hike and chairlift ride, the tour continues to the Jochpass, where you can ride your bike down the rapid bike trail back down to Trübsee. In winter you can enjoy the Jochpass and Trübsee area with winter sports activities. Many restaurants invite you to try delicacies from the region.
