The path between the Benedictine convent of Maria Rickenbach and Benedictine monastery in Engelberg is fairly demanding.
The historic pilgrim path and hiking trail passes many vantage points providing views of the surrounding Unterwalden mountains and valley floor. It starts at either Maria Rickenbach or Engelberg. The path takes in the Alpboden chairlift, Brändeln aerial cableway, Oberrickenbach, Walenalp and the Brunni region.
If there is still some room in your backpack, a visit to the convent shop in Maria Rickenbach or show dairy in Engelberg monastery is particularly recommended. Products made from home-grown alpine herbs and fine cheeses made before your very eyes await you before or after your high-altitude exertions.
The many steep climbs call for fitness and appropriate footwear. The well-signposted hike follows numerous narrow, stony paths strewn with tree roots. The best time for walking the route is summer and early/mid autumn, as snow slides can occur in spring and late autumn.
